Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur
Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with what looks like a

bacteria and yeast’, which is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha.
I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes weeks
to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s zip.
At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly looks 20 years younger.
Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy, too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she has somehow
seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine years her junior, have…
well, deflated.

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a full eight weeks,
morning to night, to see just how much I, too, can turn back the

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground myself’
in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up
my mouth à la Liz. From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both
beauty journalists. At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling water.

‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and severe
sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and
I have dark circles under my eyes. Physical pain interferes with my sleep,
and I’ve been turning rather too readily to the sauvignon blanc to
help me nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving sugar, which means I’m a
good 10lb heavier than I should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as young
as she looks? More to the point – can I really stick to it,
kombucha and all?

‘Come on Bea, get off your backside!’ Liz demands…

Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low
carb, meaning she’s a fan of lots of foods I love but
didn’t think I should eat: butter, unprocessed meat, avocados, good quality cheese, taramasalata and thick
Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape,
and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am
and dinner at 7pm. The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because eating
protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm)
because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated with
living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such as chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her intake
of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA
and mimics an anti-ageing process called autophagy, which de-ages us
at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional
glass’ of wine or tequila, but never more than two and never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves and start cooking from
scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing
– and enjoying the protein part of each meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to cut
back on my carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented
foods. Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start
to brew my own using Liz’s Scoby. But homemade
kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell. When a lunch guest asks me why
I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike so much, I reply solemnly:
‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine
has gone to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day
of exercises such as squats, lunges and press-ups is more valuable
in the long term than a high-intensity gym session once a week
or a long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael
Garry, who delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance over 5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and bone strength.
If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding up your time,
not increasing your distance.

At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about
my sciatica, and then he devises a daily regime for me.
I try press-ups and make it to three. Mortifying.
Perseverance is clearly key. As are weights, especially in your 50s.

‘The more muscle you have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis, especially during midlife,’ says Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and
hammer curls, with 3kg weights in both hands. I try tricep dips off a chair, and quickly find I can increase my reps – until by week
four I’m doing two sets of 15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes 40 minutes but
the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups,
weights – takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week. But instead of plodding up
and down the pool, I start to compete with myself,
speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how
I feel, which is sluggish and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences how our body uses oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes improve the efficiency
with which oestrogen reaches tissues around the body, meaning we use our dwindling
supplies more effectively.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot shower and feel
not happy but mutinous as I step out of the bathroom shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and
standing barefoot on the grass. ‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface
of the Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her glorious pile in the West Country.
I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio, still in my pyjamas, and feel,
well, very self-conscious. Later I graduate to the park, and – look away now – tread in dog
mess, which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.

‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports the immune system,’ she
says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a
lot more to smile about than me but, following instructions, I write down three things I am grateful for every morning, and every night
a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus another (longer) list of ‘things
that are concerning me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I
find it does make me realise what’s important and what’s not.

It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I thought.
Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find my journal and am surprised by how bereft I feel without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV and end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am…
and occasionally edging towards 10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep
if they follow her routine, which means setting an evening alarm for
9pm – to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed book or a podcast.
She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and stops eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning 

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she sleeps
with an open window, which she covers with blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential
oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this routine.
Still, I leave my phone charging in the kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock.
The lavender oil makes me sneeze, so I spray my pillows with C.
Atherley Geranium Spray instead. 

Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me how when she delivers
the kombucha. Forcing yourself to breathe through your nose is said to promote more restful
sleep.

All of this is time-consuming and takes practise, but
I find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep earlier than I have
for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time -and waking
at 7.30am. How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with
a friend who chirpily suggests a glass of wine, which turns into a
bottle. And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover,
I head to M&S and find reduced dauphinoise potatoes,
which become dinner. 

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo (£289 for
two months – you jab a biosensor the size and shape of a plastic bottle top into your upper arm, and then link it to an app on your phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which makes me tired and irritable.
Who knew that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I
lie in, eat too much cake and drink too much tequila,’ she
says. ‘But that’s fine because you then know what to
do to put it right. It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what I was so
worried about day by day, my perspective on it changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the
start of this project and how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s been easy because change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.
Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action, I apply for part-time admin jobs.
As personal trainer Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this
before. He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take
control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary
5 in off my waist and 11 in off my body as a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and the measly 3kg weights are now 6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming out again this party season.

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined
because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my sciatica is almost gone
and I can come off strong painkillers. I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the timing is surely no coincidence.
All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done
the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.
‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil. ‘Those arms!
You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content and optimistic.
You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably. Though Liz is known for her candour, so
it’s not a given.) ‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to
her, which is one of the key lessons I’ve learned. Gratitude
makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which I have
learned to love) and the odd tequila – are the habits I’ll hold on to.
But not (shudder!) the kimchi or flower beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it, anyone can.

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing
to do with DC’ during making of the $200million flop film, a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning
film – stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga and was
considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by
critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase
– with an agent familiar with Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from
the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally
ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.
Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC
Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score
of 31% and a critic score of 32%

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of
Warner Bros. Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC
two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio
but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a
reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind
of a Warner Bros. movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged
in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if
the director would make the sequel at a
lower price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20 per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static.

film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October
4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic box office,
per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film,
while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley
Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds
a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience
score of 31% and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the
domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend,
per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around $70 million – but the number has
since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the
film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over $1 billion in the
global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed
by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and $70 million. However, the budget
increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during
the 76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of
the Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International
Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a 12-minute standing ovation, per
Deadline.

others have dubbed the movie ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant.’ 

Daily Mail’s Brian Viner commended the move as ‘bold’ and ‘brilliant’ but
said it lacked any thrill. 

The Independent’s Geoffrey Macnab said: ‘Today Joker is best remembered
as one of the most subversive and original films of the last decade,
while its hugely anticipated sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared
to have no idea what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the
movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive
amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and
radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s
Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which
has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job
on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from
the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of
the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were
‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose to
shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself
in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the
Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP
Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook
before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s
in the first line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many
times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that they create,’ he
said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist, wonders if the
Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me
and he’s blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about,
which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private
holidays when you were the Transport Minister?
The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the
Prime Minister should refer himself to the anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf
purchase of a $4.3million clifftop mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for
him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to
get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘So to the extent that it has, I would say …
anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not
a hit job on Anthony Albanese. This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences
politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal,
National, you name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia.
I’m not here trying to get a scalp. That’s not what this book
is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia
and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie
mindset of politicians,’ he said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a
long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him,
is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at
the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every
year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims
in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for
an MP’s travel to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones
the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that
‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s
in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted
and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the
only person at Qantas who can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.

No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end
of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and
understands the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve
got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but they don’t get paid like
CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal
travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Rooney Mara made a rare appearance with her husband Joaquin Phoenix
at the Hollywood premiere of his movie Joker: Folie à Deux,
which was held at the TCL Chinese Theater on Monday

The 39-year-old actress – who reportedly changed her surname
to Phoenix in 2020 – decided not to pose
on the black carpet with the 49-year-old Oscar winner but
she, nevertheless, showed her support for his project

Phoenix – who relies on groomer Carlos Ferraz – looked dapper
in a classic black suit and necktie with shiny Oxfords and $385 Garrett Leight
‘Ace Sun’ shades. 

Phoenix (born Bottom) and the two-time Oscar nominee are also parents of four-year-old son River Mara Phoenix named after Joaquin’s big brother who died,

‘I love it. I love it so much. I think it’s the best thing in the world,’ Rooney
gushed of motherhood on the LaunchLeft Podcast last year.

‘It doesn’t feel like a two-actor house because I didn’t work for the first three and a half years we were together.
Basically since we’ve been together, I only worked one or two
times and one was really small and short. It feels like a
creative household, we’re constantly talking about creative things.’

The Phoenixes originally met in 2012 playing lovers Theodore Twombly and
Catherine Klausen on the LA set of Spike Jonze’s AI rom-com Her, but they didn’t start dating until after her 2016 split
from her Discovery director Charlie McDowell.

The Joker’s real identity was revealed in Folie à Deux’s ‘brutal ending’ – and it’s not who you think. 

Identity confusion is the theme throughout the entire
film, as the title suggests, but the ending of the second instalment may leave some fans surprised. 

Following on from 2019’s psychological thriller from director Todd Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as clown Arthur Fleck who
has descended into mental illness. 

Folie à Deux begins with Arthur behind bars in Arkham Asylum, waiting to see whether he will be judged
sane enough to stand trial for the murders he committed
two years prior.   

In the meantime he is enjoying his celebrity status with fellow prisoners and even the warders, one of whom, a sadistic Irishman played by Brendan Gleeson,
feeds him cigarettes in return for jokes.

His lawyer (Catherine Keener) strives to show that Joke is accused of five murders, rather than Arthur. Lee just as urgently wants him to identify as his demonic alter ego. 

In the final scenes, Arthur renounces his Joker alter-ego and is found guilty of first-degree murder.

As he is being sentenced a car bomb detonates outside the court, with two people helping Arthur escape, but he is later caught by the police and
taken back to Arkham. 

In the Asylum a young patient begins to tell Arthur a joke, before stabbing
him in the stomach and while he bleeds to death, carves a smile into his own face. 

It raises questions surrounding the Joker’s true
identity, as it would seem he never went on to become the
famed villain, instead he was just the person who inspired
the man who eventually became him.

thing that’s been put upon him, this idea that Gotham people put on him, that he represents. 

‘He’s an unwitting icon. This thing was placed on him, and he doesn’t want to live
as a fake anymore — he wants to be who he is.’

The movie serves as a follow-up to Phoenix’s 2019 box office hit, which was simply titled Joker. 

The Todd Phillips-directed musical was released in theatres on October
4, following an October 2 international release.

Bright and early, my old friend, the beauty and wellness entrepreneur Liz Earle, is standing at my door clutching a Kilner jar with
what looks like a small sponge floating in murky water.

‘I made kombucha for you,’ she says with an enthusiasm I don’t entirely share.

(The sponge, it turns out, is the Scoby, or ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast’, which
is what’s used to ferment sweetened tea to make kombucha.
I don’t realise at the time, but this hideous thing takes weeks to develop and is in fact a very generous gift.)

The truth is, I’d drink (almost) anything if it gave me Liz’s zip.
At 61, a mother of five and a new grandmother, she honestly looks 20 years younger.
Fans of her YouTube channel and her 170,000 Instagram followers will know how bright and smooth her
skin is, but in person she is fizzing with energy, too.

Liz and I have been friends for 25 years – over which time she
has somehow seemed to gain in vitality as I, nine years her junior, have…
well, deflated.

So here’s my plan. I am going to Live Like Liz for a
full eight weeks, morning to night, to see just
how much I, too, can turn back the clock.

I am going to eat, drink and exercise like Liz, ‘ground
myself’ in a flower bed in my pyjamas like her, and even tape up my mouth à la Liz.
From my gut to my hormones, my brain to the very cells of my skin, I will follow the ‘bio-hacks’ set out in her new book A Better Second Half: Dial Back Your Age To Live A
Longer, Healthier, Happier Life, which swiftly became a bestseller on its
release this year.

Liz says it can’t fail, so long as I commit to it.

‘Who’s to say we can’t or shouldn’t change the way we age?’ she asks.

‘I was stronger, fitter and more capable in my 50s than I
was in my 40s, so why can’t I be even more so in my 60s,
70s and beyond?’

Perhaps more significantly, after the ‘car crash of emotional wreckage’ caused by the breakdown of
her second marriage, and the divorce she went through
in 2020, she now says: ‘I’m happier at 61 than I was at 40.’

Career-wise, it shows. When we met back in the 1990s we were both beauty journalists.
At launches for new products, I’d merrily down the free Krug while Liz sipped sparkling
water. ‘Ah Bea, you were the yin to my yang,’ she says.

Now, her wellness empire has mushroomed… and I’m suffering major work anxiety, a not-unrelated financial crisis and
severe sciatica.

Frankly, I look and feel knackered. My skin is dull and
I have dark circles under my eyes. Physical pain interferes with my sleep,
and I’ve been turning rather too readily
to the sauvignon blanc to help me nod off.

Food is not a priority: I’m either not interested or craving
sugar, which means I’m a good 10lb heavier than I should be.

So, can living like my rather fabulous friend make me feel as
young as she looks? More to the point – can I really stick to it, kombucha and all?

Week one: I face up to my middle-age spread
Liz’s top-line diet philosophy is high-protein, low carb, meaning she’s a fan of lots of foods I love
but didn’t think I should eat: butter, unprocessed meat,
avocados, good quality cheese, taramasalata and thick
Greek yoghurt.

High protein helps us ‘shift to a leaner, more toned shape, and lose that middle-aged spread,’ she says.

Timing matters. Liz eats two meals a day – brunch around 11am and dinner at 7pm.
The order matters too: clear your plate of chicken before rice, because
eating protein before carbs keeps blood sugar levels stable.

In recent years she has increased her coffee intake (before 2pm) because studies show four to five cups is ‘strongly associated with
living longer’ thanks to the bioactives in coffee beans such as chlorogenic acid.

She eats wheatgerm, soya beans and nuts to up her
intake of spermidine – a dietary molecule that interacts with our DNA and mimics an anti-ageing process called
autophagy, which de-ages us at a cellular level.

Alcohol is basically a no-no. Liz has the ‘occasional glass’ of wine or
tequila, but never more than two and never alone.

I chuck out the ready meals and plonk, roll up my sleeves
and start cooking from scratch. I grill venison, roast a chicken and make soups
with the leftovers.

Eating at specific times works for me – I’m never very hungry first thing – and enjoying the
protein part of each meal first means I’m fuller and find it easy to cut back on my carb portions.

Gut health is a big focus, which means more fermented foods.

Much to my surprise, I love the kombucha and soon start to brew my own using Liz’s Scoby.
But homemade kimchi – fermented veg – is a harder sell.

When a lunch guest asks me why I’m forcing myself to eat something I dislike so much, I
reply solemnly: ‘Liz told me to.’

Week two: I discover I can do only 3 press-ups
I really need help with exercise because sciatica means my normal routine has gone to pot.

Thankfully, Liz reckons just ten minutes a day of exercises such as squats,
lunges and press-ups is more valuable in the long
term than a high-intensity gym session once a week or a long park run.

She introduces me to her personal trainer, Michael Garry, who
delivers the (bombshell, but welcome) news that running any distance over
5k can ‘start to have negative effects’ on our immune system and
bone strength. If you’re a runner, make it harder by speeding
up your time, not increasing your distance.

At Michael’s insistence, I consult a physio about my sciatica,
and then he devises a daily regime for me. I try press-ups
and make it to three. Mortifying. Perseverance is clearly
key. As are weights, especially in your 50s. ‘The more muscle you
have, the more your bones are protected from osteoporosis,
especially during midlife,’ says Michael.

For cardio, says Beatrice, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool,
I start to compete with myself, speeding up the laps

For my slack and flabby upper arms, he advises shoulder presses and hammer
curls, with 3kg weights in both hands. I try tricep dips off a
chair, and quickly find I can increase my reps – until by week four I’m doing two sets of
15.

I work out three times a week at home. At first the routine takes
40 minutes but the more I do, the faster I do it, until the whole thing – stretching, press-ups, weights – takes just 20 minutes.

For cardio, I keep swimming twice a week.
But instead of plodding up and down the pool, I start
to compete with myself, speeding up the laps.

Week three: I slow the hormonal roller coaster
I’m menopausal and already on HRT, but I know I could improve how I feel, which is
sluggish and foggy.

Liz introduces me to something called the ‘estrobolome’ – the specific collection of bacteria in the gut that influences how our body
uses oestrogen. Put simply, some microbes improve the efficiency with which oestrogen reaches tissues around the body,
meaning we use our dwindling supplies more effectively.

The best way to support your estrobolome is by eating
fibre from veg, seeds and nuts, plus some of the low-sugar fruits such as apples, berries
and plums. Back to the supermarket I go.

To boost the happy hormone serotonin, my saintly mentor insists
I finish my morning shower with a minimum 60-second blast
of icy cold water, resulting – she claims – in a ‘post-shock high’ and ‘genuine glow’.

Hmmm. I find it hard to relinquish the comfort of a hot shower and feel
not happy but mutinous as I step out of the bathroom shivering.

Week four: I stand in the flower bed
Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning and standing barefoot on the grass.

‘Grounding’ apparently enables electrons from the surface of the
Earth to transmit deep into the body, ‘where they have an anti-inflammatory effect’.

Liz tells me she does this in the tranquil grounds of her
glorious pile in the West Country. I do it in a flower bed in my shared patio,
still in my pyjamas, and feel, well, very self-conscious.
Later I graduate to the park, and – look away now –
tread in dog mess, which does not improve my emotional wellbeing.

She also encourages us to keep a Five Minute Gratitude Journal twice a day.
‘Gratitude is… a superpower that improves longevity and supports
the immune system,’ she says.

I can’t help but think my better-off mate has rather a lot more to smile about
than me but, following instructions, I write down three things I am grateful for every morning, and
every night a short list of ‘good things’ that happened that day, plus
another (longer) list of ‘things that are concerning
me’.

My scepticism around gratitude slowly lifts as I find it does make me realise what’s important and what’s not.
It helps me see that things are a lot brighter than I thought.
Packing in a rush for a weekend away, I can’t find my
journal and am surprised by how bereft I feel
without it.

Week five: I start to sleep well
I’m a night owl – I stay up too late watching TV
and end up hitting my snooze button past 8.30am… and occasionally edging towards
10am.

Liz reckons anyone can improve their sleep if they
follow her routine, which means setting an evening alarm for 9pm
– to remind yourself to start ‘winding down for bed’.

Emails, social media and TV are switched off, replaced by a printed book or a
podcast. She takes 120g of magnesium glycinate in a milky drink half an hour before bed (and stops eating two hours before).

Living Like Liz means getting outside first thing in the morning 

Liz wears a bamboo fibre nightie or pyjamas to keep warm because she sleeps with an open window, which she covers with
blackout blinds and curtains, and sprinkles her pillow with a few drops of neat lavender essential oil.

I’m an e-book reader, so already failing at this
routine. Still, I leave my phone charging in the
kitchen and buy a regular alarm clock. The lavender oil makes me
sneeze, so I spray my pillows with C. Atherley Geranium Spray instead. 

Oh, and I tape my lips up – Liz shows me
how when she delivers the kombucha. Forcing yourself to breathe
through your nose is said to promote more restful sleep.

All of this is time-consuming and takes practise,
but I find the ritual soothing. Five weeks in, I’m getting to sleep earlier than I
have for years – at 10.30pm after 20 minutes drop-off time
-and waking at 7.30am. How virtuous!

Week six: I crash off the wagon
I’m doing my best, but then I go for lunch with a friend
who chirpily suggests a glass of wine, which turns into a bottle.

And then a second. Later, with a daytime hangover, I head to M&S and
find reduced dauphinoise potatoes, which become dinner. 

Liz has got me on a blood sugar tracker called Lingo
(£289 for two months – you jab a biosensor the
size and shape of a plastic bottle top into your upper arm, and then link it to an app
on your phone), which shows a massive post-potato spike and then a huge slump, which
makes me tired and irritable. Who knew that such deliciousness had such a high glycaemic load?

I call Liz to ‘fess up. ‘I have the odd day when I lie in, eat too much cake and drink too much tequila,
‘ she says. ‘But that’s fine because you then know what to do to put it
right. It’s not about being perfect.’ Phew!

Week seven: I tackle my financial mess
Re-reading my journal really helps here. By documenting what
I was so worried about day by day, my perspective on it changes.

Here, in black and white, is a record of how I felt at the start of this project and how I’ve evolved.

I’ve come unstuck – in a good way. I’m not going to pretend it’s
been easy because change is uncomfortable, but I realise there’s simply
nothing to be gained from the worry spiral.

If freelance life is tough, and my income erratic, I’m going to do something about it.
Buoyed with the confidence that comes with action,
I apply for part-time admin jobs. As personal trainer
Michael observes as we work out on Zoom, I wouldn’t have done this before.
He’s right. Finally I’ve started to take control.

Week eight: And the winner is…
So how have eight weeks of Living Like Liz changed me?

Physically, I’m in much better shape. I’ve lost 7 lb and taken an extraordinary 5 in off my waist and 11 in off my body as
a whole.

Those three pathetic press-ups have become a whopping 40 per workout, and
the measly 3kg weights are now 6kg, meaning I have proper bicep definition. The sleeveless tops will be coming out again this party
season.

My skin is clearer, eyes brighter and face more defined because I’ve reduced the carb-inducing bloat.
I’m sleeping better and feeling infinitely less anxious.

Most remarkably – and this is really life-changing – my
sciatica is almost gone and I can come off strong painkillers.
I know sciatica can disappear of its own accord, but the timing is surely no coincidence.
All those exercises have strengthened the muscles around my
spine and buttocks and I’m convinced it’s done the trick.

I meet Liz for lunch, nervous about whether she’ll see a difference.
‘Oh wow,’ she says, taking a good look at her pupil.
‘Those arms! You definitely look younger.’

We chat for a while and she adds: ‘You also seem more content
and optimistic. You have an inner glow and a halo of positivity.’

Well, yes, she would say that, wouldn’t she? (Probably.
Though Liz is known for her candour, so it’s not a given.)
‘I wasn’t sure you were going to prioritise yourself
enough and commit,’ she admits ‘You weren’t an easy nut to crack so I’m thrilled.’

I’m delighted with my gold star. And I’m grateful to her, which is one of the key lessons I’ve learned.

Gratitude makes everything feel better.

That – along with the kombucha, ice-cold showers (which
I have learned to love) and the odd tequila
– are the habits I’ll hold on to. But not (shudder!) the kimchi
or flower beds.

As Liz says, everyone deserves to have a better second half – and if I can do it, anyone can.

The cost for one of London’s most pricey apartments
will begin at £35million – with 600 megarich customers already securing a spot on the waiting list.

Pricing details of billionaire John Caudwell’s spectacular 1 Mayfair development have now been revealed and only those with the deepest pockets can hope to afford
one of the lavish pads.

The cheapest apartment on offer is expected to be
an eye-watering £35million – around 70 times the average cost of a house in the
capital.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 the scheme will easily surpass London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One
Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

Caudwell told The Standard that there are already more
than 600 prospective buyers on a waiting list of billionaires and centi-millionaires who have
expressed an interest in making a purchase at
the scheme.

There will be just 24 ‘principal residences’ in the property including lateral apartments, penthouses and townhouses with up to five
bedrooms, and five more smaller ‘pieds-à-terre’ apartments.

The size of the homes has not yet been disclosed but the
developers say even the most modest property will start with a guide price exceeded by only a
handful of mansions in London’s richest neighbourhoods. 

The average price of all 29 units – which cover 300,000 sq ft – will be close to £70million.

The entry level price of £35million is 70 times the average London property value
of around £500,000, and 130 times the national average price of £268,000 revealed in today’s Nationwide house price survey for November.

The development’s basement is being dug down to 90ft below ground level to
make room for a health spa with a 20 metre swimming
pool as well as a car park.

The designs were led by New York based architect Robert Stern and practice RAMSA, with contractors, Mace, the construction managers and PJ Carey responsible for
the creation of the basement substructure and superstructure.

Due to complete in Spring 2026 after a six years build the scheme will easily
surpass London’s previous record breaker, the £1.3billion One Hyde Park development in Knightsbridge.

Caudwell – who founded the mobile phones retailers Phones 4u – attended
the topping out of 1 Mayfair alongside senior members of
the construction team.

The ceremony was marked by the final steel rafter, one of
79 at roof level, being put into place on the top of
the nine-storey main apartment building.

No expense has been spared on the building’s interior and it will feature a ceiling with
hand-painted frescos based on Michelangelo’s Map of the
Heavens in the Vatican, a reception room with a
double height ceiling and 18ft high French windows overlooking the garden.

There will also be a Palace of Versailles Hall of Mirrors-style crystal callery, created from over 1,264 hand-set pieces of cut glass,
a library and a garden gallery, with seating areas opening directly onto the central courtyard garden.

Briton Matthew Smith, the partner of former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released on $10 million bond.

Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer
James Jacobson allegedly used a “casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties
at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.

After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held in custody in New York.
Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to the east of New York City.

Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond put up by Jeffries and his
family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for
the eastern district of New York.

An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to be a
large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith, Jeffries and Jacobson.

Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.

Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014, is accused of creating and
maintaining a ring that recruited young men to have sex with him and Smith.

Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion” to traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.

Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors
suggest the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and
victims to come forward.

Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and Smith
and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have sex with them.

Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.

Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and was released on half a
million dollars bond in October.

US pop star Lady Gaga has taken on a track known best to Aussies as the opening theme to the iconic comedy series Kath & Kim.

The song, originally written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the 1964 stage musical The Roar Of
The Greasepaint – The Smell Of The Crowd, is performed by
Gaga for her film Joker: Folie à Deux.

To most Australians, it is the bold and brassy version sung by Gina Riley,
who also plays Kimberly Diane ‘Kim’ Craig (née Day) in the legendary comedy.

Before being immortalised in to the fabric of Australian pop culture,
thanks to Gina’s  rendition, the song had been covered by the likes of Shirley Bassey in 1968 and
Sammy Davis Jr in 1965.

And now, the Born This Way hitmaker has taken a stab at the track – with the results markedly different to the brassy feel of
the Kath & Kim version.

Gaga’s take, which also features on her new album Harlequin,
is a much more  stripped back that builds to a crescendo thanks to rocking guitars.

Speaking to Today Extra about the track, Kath & Kim star Peter Rowsthorn joked that he was ‘constantly’ hounded by
the US pop star regarding the track.

‘She’s constantly calling me, so I know she’s a big
fan,’ Pete, who play’s Kim’s on-again-off-again husband Brett in the series, said.

Six months after making its world premiere at the Bentonville Film Festival,
The Seven Faces Of Jane has dropped in select theaters and VOD.

And as part of promotion some of the cast and crew for the
anthology film were on hand for the West Coast premiere in Los Angeles on Friday night.

The movie consists of eight short films, all of which star Gillian Jacobs as the title character.

LONDON, May 12 (Reuters) – Philip Morris International’s $16 billion bid for smaller rival Swedish Match highlights the urgency among cigarette
makers to tap new and potentially less harmful alternatives as regulation and health
concerns snuff out traditional smokes.

Marlboro maker Philip Morris agreed on Wednesday to buy Swedish Match, one of the world’s biggest makers of oral nicotine products.
These include Snus – a sucked tobacco product the firm says
is less harmful than smoking – as well as Zyn nicotine pouches,
which are used the same way and tobacco-free.

Both are niche products, but are growing, with Swedish Match’s almost 50%
share of the global tobacco-free oral nicotine market putting
it ahead of both British American Tobacco and Altria Group in that category.

Thomas Russo, managing partner at Gardner Russo & Gardner
which owns shares in both Philip Morris (PMI) and
Swedish Match, welcomed the tie-up as opening
a “new field” for PMI’s smoke-free products,
which include iQOS tobacco heating devices.

“It’s a deal that would continue industry consolidation that’s been underway for the past decade,” he said.

Russo’s U.S. investment firm has a 0.47% stake in PMI and
a 0.09% holding in Swedish Match, according to Refinitiv data.

Tobacco companies have scrambled over the past decade to find new
markets as regulators crack down on cigarettes and more people quit smoking due
to the health risks.

Snus – a Swedish-style snuff – is a moist, smoke-free tobacco product that is placed behind the upper
lip, either loose or in portioned sachets. The global market for snus increased
from 7,000 tonnes in 2008 to nearly 10,000 tonnes in 2019, according to
data firm Euromonitor.

In 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing
of Swedish Match’s Snus as less harmful than cigarettes.

DEALMAKING

The possible PMI-Swedish Match deal is the latest in a string of investments by the $900 billion-plus tobacco industry in potentially lower risk products, including
e-cigarettes and tobacco heating devices.

Euromonitor estimates the global market for smokeless tobacco, e-vapour products and heated tobacco
was about $67 billion in 2021, nearly three times the size
it was in 2016.

PMI Chief Executive Jacek Olczak said last year his company had
spent more than $8 billion on reduced risk products since it began developing them a decade
ago.

He said then that PMI would reach its 2025 target for 50% of sales from smoke-free products by growing its existing business,
rather than acquisitions.

But buying Swedish Match, would give PMI – which was spun off
from Altria in 2008 – an established U.S. market and distribution system,
Bernstein analyst Callum Elliot said.

“That said, the deal hasn’t gone through yet,” Elliot added.
“I imagine that Swedish Match is a business that could be appealing to other players within the industry, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a counter bid from other companies, particularly Japan Tobacco Inc.”

A Japan Tobacco spokesperson said the company does not
comment on rumours or speculation.

COMPETITION

PMI, the No.3 cigarette company in 2020 after China National Tobacco Corp and British
American Tobacco (BAT), has not been alone in its
attempts to expand beyond combustible tobacco.

News of its move on Swedish Match sent Altria shares down about
9% on Tuesday as investors worried about a step up in competition for the U.S.
company.

In 2018, Altria bought a 35% stake in e-cigarette company Juul Labs Inc for $12.8 billion. A year later, it bought 80% of Burger Söhne Holding AG,
allowing it to distribute the Swiss company’s On! oral
nicotine pouches.

Other rivals are watching with interest.

“We think a multi-category strategy in tobacco and nicotine is the right one,” BAT’s chief marketing officer Kingsley Wheaton told Reuters
on Tuesday.

BAT is the world No.2 in tobacco-free oral nicotine products behind Swedish Match.
Sales at its “new categories” division jumped 51% to 2.05 billion pounds
($2.52 billion) last year, helped by its e-cigarettes and oral nicotine products.

The London-listed company is aiming for the division to
reach revenues of 5 billion pounds, and profitability, by 2025.

“As our business transforms, our portfolio transforms, and, so too, our competitive landscape will evolve,” Wheaton said.

While PMI is pursing Swedish Match, other rivals
prefer to go it alone.

Imperial Brands is focusing on developing its own products in the heated tobacco market,
particularly in Europe, a spokesperson said.

But there is still all to play for.

“The whole next-generation product space is still very nascent – no one in the industry has yet created any next generation product which really, fully replicates the experience of a smoked cigarette or a traditional cigarette,”
the spokesperson said.
